When should I start kinesiotherapy after surgery, how long does it last and what should I expect from the first visit?
Recovering from surgery often poses questions to which it is important to get accurate and calm answers. In this article, we'll give you clarity on three of the most common questions we hear at our Kinesiotherapy and Rehabilitation Center Terapi Office in Sofia:
When should I start kinesitherapy after surgery?
The timing for starting kinesitherapy depends on the type of surgery, the patient's condition and the recommendations of the treating orthopaedic surgeon. In most cases:
- After arthroscopy of the knee or shoulder - Therapy begins in the first 3-5 days with gentle passive movements and counter-current techniques.
- After anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction - The recovery program starts in the hospital and continues actively in outpatient (out of hospital) settings from the first week.
- After endoprosthesis (joint replacement) - Kinesitherapy begins immediately, under supervision, and continues with an active program to restore gait, range and strength.
- After breakage - after removal of the immobilization (cast/orthesis), therapy is started immediately to avoid loss of mobility and muscle atrophy.
Important: Delaying therapy may lead to slower recovery and poorer long-term results.
How long does a kinesitherapy course last?
The duration of the course depends on:
- the complexity of the operation;
- the presence of complications (edema, stiffness, pain);
- your physical condition before the intervention;
- motivation and regularity of visits.
Generally speaking:
- Light interventions (arthroscopy, partial damage) - 4 to 6 weeks;
- Serious orthopaedic operations (PCV, endoprosthesis) - 3 to 6 months (in different phases);
- Chronic conditions - may require a maintenance course 1-2 times a week over a longer period.
В Terapi Office create customized programsthat adapt according to your progress and daily goals - whether your goal is to walk pain-free or run again.
