When can I run, play sports or exercise after surgery? - Recovery and return to activity after orthopaedic knee surgery
After any orthopedic knee surgery, one of the most common questions patients ask us at OFFICE THERAPY is:
"When can I run again?"
"When is it safe to start training?"
"Will I be able to play sports again like before?"
The truth is that the answer depends on the type of surgery, the individual condition of the patient, the recovery process and the proper implementation of the rehabilitation program.
Most common orthopedic knee surgeries and when you can return to sports
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction
What is it?
This is one of the most common sports injuries in which a torn anterior cruciate ligament is repaired with a ligament graft.
Return to sport:
- Walking: 2-4 weeks
- Running: after 3 months
- Light sport/training: 4-6 months
- Contact sport: 6-9 months, after stability and functionality tests
What is important?
Precision rehabilitation with emphasis on balance, strength, hip stability and proper movement technique.
- Arthroscopic meniscectomy or meniscus suturing
What is it?
Operative intervention on the meniscus - removal or suturing of the damaged area.
Return to sport:
- At meniscectomy (removal): sport after 4-6 weeks
- At meniscus suturing (suturing): sport after 3-4 months, depending on the type of fixation
Important clarification: When suturing, the load is limited in the first weeks so as not to compromise the healing.
- Knee joint replacement (endoprosthesis)
What is it?
In advanced arthrosis, an artificial joint is inserted to replace the damaged parts of the knee.
Return to activity:
- Walking without aids: 4-6 weeks
- Swimming, yoga, cycling: 2-3 months
- Running and jumping: not recommended at an artificial joint
- Active movement and training: tailored to low impact
What is recommended?
Focus on low-load exercises - elliptical machine, aqua gymnastics, functional kinesitherapy.
- Arthroscopic "cleaning" of the joint (debridement)
What is it?
A minimally invasive procedure to remove damaged tissue in the knee joint.
Recovery:
- Walking: immediately after surgery
- Sports load: 3-6 weeksif there is no additional structural damage
General recommendations from the OFFICE THERAPY team
Do not rush. Each organism has its own rhythm of recovery.
Follow a program led by a kinesitherapy specialist.
Do not ignore the phases of rehabilitation - each has a specific purpose and prepares the body for the next.
Functional recovery is the key to a long-term result - stability, balance and control.
Evaluation before returning to sport - functional tests, proprioception and joint confidence.
How do you know you're ready?
- You can run without pain or swelling
- Have strength and stability comparable to the unaffected leg
- You can do jumps and landings with good technique
- Withstand dynamic loading without symptoms
